How we can help

We love collaborating.

Wherever possible, we work with others to build a stronger and more effective civil society. We believe that a different way of working is possible.

What we do: develop strategic communications, build active memberships, create better working cultures, facilitate action learning, carry out research, workshops and training.

So if you’ve got an idea for creating change that you’d like to explore with us, we’d love to hear from you.

We’ve outlined some of what we do in detail below:

Developing strategic communications

What are your communications really saying about you and how you want the world to change? What unintentional impacts might be created by the hidden moral codes behind the language you use? From participatory framing workshops to communications analyses, we can help you better align your communications with your organisation’s vision and values. We’ve worked with organisations across sectors: conservation, LGBTI rights, climate change, transport, food education and economic justice.

Example

Human Rights Framing

In 2013-2014 we worked with the Equality & Diversity Forum and Counterpoint to analyse the framing of human rights in the UK and develop a strategy for how civil society organisations could work to reframe and detoxify the human rights discourse.

Building active memberships

Social change can’t be owned by professional organisations alone. Some of the most inspirational movements of recent times have been driven in large part by the grassroots – so why do so many organisations hold their membership at arms-length, only asking them to donate or sign online petitions? We work to help organisations breathe new life into their membership.

Example

Common Cause for Nature

In 2012-2013 we were commissioned by 13 of the UK’s leading conservation NGOs to analyse their communications and membership activities. We’ve subsequently worked with several organisations to deepen their member engagement for more substantive and lasting social change.

Creating empowering cultures

The principles embedded in the processes that our organisations live by importantly shape how effective we are and the health and happiness of staff. We work with organisations to explore how and where their culture and practice could be more aligned with their values.

Example

Values & Food

In 2014-2015, in collaboration with Organic Centre Wales and Aberystwyth University, we investigated how to design good education about food through values-led practice. Our final report, including best practice case studies, is due out in summer 2015.

Researching strategic questions

Research is our middle name (quite literally) and while we don’t think that evidence alone can change the world, we do think that the right research can help us direct our work for meaningful social change. We like to work with partners in both academia and civil society to discover what values, frames and an understanding of systems can tell us about the world we live in and the role of civil society in bringing about change.

Example

Valuing Equality

In 2014, we published Valuing Equality with Equinet, the European Network of Equality Bodies. The report investigated the links between values and social indicators and attitudes towards equality across 25 European countries.

Facilitating action learning

We are experienced presenters and facilitators, happy to design and run a variety of training and workshop events, including long-term, immersive and participatory action learning programmes. These allow people to explore, creatively and in-depth, what substantive change might look like for any group or organisation.

Example

Campaign Lab

Since 2013, we’ve been involved in the running of a twice-yearly action learning programme for campaigners across civil society, in collaboration with the Finance Innovation Lab and the New Economics Foundation. The programme builds a strong community of campaigners and activists with a clear sense of purpose and a deep understanding of systemic change.
