Join us to learn how to talk about modern slavery in ways that builds understanding and sparks effective change.
Wednesday 18 December 2024, 12.30 – 14.00 (Online)
Hosted by: James Robertson, Associate, Public Interest Research Institute (PIRC)
Overview:
Most discussions on modern slavery in the UK focus on punishing traffickers or educating “at-risk” people, but this frame leaves out the systemic causes that enable exploitation. PIRC worked with the Modern Slavery and Human Rights Policy and Evidence Centre, to develop new ways of framing modern slavery—working directly with people with lived experience of exploitation to guide the language and narratives the messages promote.
Topics Covered:
- Working with people with lived experience of modern slavery to guide the framing goals and language
- Moving beyond the “victim-rescuer” narrative
- The problem with the frame “modern slavery”
- Framing specific causes and solutions to shift public attitudes
- Building empathy and respect, not pity
Format: Presentation, Q&A, and discussion
